An Epidemiologist
By Maria Yung
There are a lot of jobs in the world that benefits the planet and the people in it. One of these jobs is an epidemiologist. An epidemiologist is a person who studies patterns of diseases or health risks in population. People who are epidemiologists try to figure how a virus is impacting an organism and how it is transmitted to other people. For example, a man named Carlos J. Finlay was an epidemiologist. He researched a disease called Yellow Fever and tried to find the cause of it. In the website https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Finlay , it states, “A year later Finlay identified a mosquito of the genus Aedes as the organism transmitting yellow fever.[“1]’ His theory was followed by the recommendation to control the mosquito population as a way to control the spread of the disease.” Carlos J. Finlay’s hypothesis was proven valid about 20 years later. He encouraged further research in this disease that had affected numerous people. Being an epidemiologist is a great career that will make a difference in the world.

Organic vs Conventional Foods:
|
FOOD SAFETY GUIDELINES
|
What is the big deal about organic foods? Why is there a difference between organic and conventional foods? When people think about organic foods they think about healthier fruits and vegetables, but think again. The word organic actually refers to the way farmers grow foodproducts such as fruits, vegetables, etc.
The big difference would be that when you are growing organic foods, you don't use chemical fertilizers and pesticides; instead, you use natural pesticides and fertilizers. Organics fruits and vegetables are not only found in health food stores, organic food is now a regular feature and found in most supermarkets. When you see a USDA Organic label on any kind of organic food, you wonder what it means. The USDA Organic label means it is produced and processed according to the USDA standards. The phrase "100% organic" it means that the product has to be completely organic or made up of all organic ingredients. When you say that it is "organic", this product is at least 95% organic. The label is voluntary and some organic producers may use it. Everyone believes that organics foods is safer, tastes better, and is more nutritious; however, there is not enough medical evidence to support that organic food is safer or healthier than conventional foods. Now you can think about the difference between organics and conventional foods and make your choice. |
You might think that food safety would just be washing your hands, but you are wrong! There is more than one rule for cooking or baking. Sometimes you need to do specific things for specific foods.
Food safety is such as cleaning your hands, utensils, and cutting boards before they come in contact with other foods such as raw meat, sea food, poultry, etc. Separating food from each other is also very important such as raw meat and poultry and never share the same cutting board with different foods. This is very important to prevent food contamination. You might be wondering how you know when the food is cooked safely? You know by looking at a food thermometer. For poultry it needs to be at 165F, ground beef 155F, and fish, pork or beef 145F. What should I do with my leftovers you might be wondering? Refrigerate any leftovers of your and take them out within two hours. Make sure to always keep your refrigerator at 40F or below. These are all very important things that you should know about food safety! By: Abril Valdes |
